LAN Backbone Ecosystem Cisco

cisco-logo500x300Cisco Systems are one of the major vendors on the market of core and distribution layer switches with their Catalyst 6800, 6500, 4500 and 3750 series switches. Cisco Systems Catalyst LAN Enterprise switches are listed as market leaders for the past few years according to analyst report companies.

Catalyst switches support a wide range of deployments, including enterprise campus, branch offices, midsize organizations, and small and medium-sized businesses (SMB), and offer highly secure access, operational simplicity, energy efficiency, and enhanced connected user experience. Cisco Catalyst switches utilize ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) to use hardware-based processing of traffic for faster and more efficient packet forwarding.

Cisco Express Forwarding (CEF/dCEF) is advanced Layer 3 IP switching technology. CEF optimizes network performance and scalability for networks with large and dynamic traffic patterns, such as the Internet, on networks characterized by intensive Web-based applications, or interactive sessions. Distributed CEF (dCEF) is the mode in which line cards perform express forwarding. Cisco Catalyst switches support dCEF to offload RP CPU processing utilization. When distributed Cisco Express Forwarding is enabled, line cards that support dCEF, maintain an identical copy of the FIB and adjacency tables. The line cards perform express forwarding between port adapters, thus relieving the RP of involvement in the switching operation. Distributed Cisco Express Forwarding uses an interprocess communication (IPC) mechanism to ensure synchronization of FIB tables and adjacency tables on the RP and line cards.

The Cisco Catalyst switches series 6800, 6500 and 4500E provide a modular chassis supporting a range of line-card options for all customer network deployments. Cisco Catalyst 4500X and 3750X series provide fixed chassis one rack unit high performance switches with up to 1.6 Tbps of switching capacity with VSS on 4500X switches. Cisco Catalyst 6800 series switches are optimized for 10/40/100 Gbps services with high slot capacity (up to 880 Gbps) and switching capacity up to 11.4 Tbps. Cisco 6500 series switches performance scales up to 400Mpps, providing one of the highest performing switch products on the market today. It supports a range of chassis options delivering from 3 to 13 slots. All 6500 chassis support redundant supervisor engines as well as redundant power supplies. Cisco Catalyst core switches ensure nonstop connectivity and business continuity. In-service software upgrades virtually eliminate downtime for updates, while the virtual switching system (VSS) enables two active switches to appear as one, with a single point of management.
